I came to barefoot running the way most of us seemed to – tired of the long term pain and problems associated with trying to run in shoes. For me the issue has always been shin splints. I would do everything “right” according to the conventional wisdom – I ramped up my mileage slowly, stretched religiously, bought expensive shoes and pair after pair of orthotics. But nothing helped and I would go through these cycles of running for a few months until the pain was unbearable, then taking a few weeks off. This lasted for about a year and a half.

Finally, I read Born to Run and like most of us I became a convert.
