Introduction

I am Nyal Davidsson and here is a little bit about myself. I am  a 31 year old man living in Norway. I have been running an average of 20 to 25 miles a week for the last ten years. I have run on all kinds of terrain, as I have lived in several different cities here and in the United States. I prefer trails that are chock full of hills. I also enjoy running through interesting areas or landscapes.
Like most people, I have gone barefoot a lot when I was a kid. When I was 18 or so, I used to hike barefoot at times and never really had any problems. It was almost as if my feet were made to be naked.
I have had a tendency to develop Achilles tendonitis. Lately, I am suffering from tendonitis on another part of the leg. This type of injury concerns me a lot. I have never had any problems with shin splints, but have had sore knees a couple times. I have to be careful in choosing my shoes. I buy and use trail runners of several brands. I have used regular running shoes, but they have poor traction on snow and ice.

I am a very slow runner. I have always just taken my time and have a high cadence and am light on my feet. I have noticed I tend not to heel strike very much and I wonder if this is partly the reason I have been largely injury free. My right foot splays to the right, as I am also a longboarder and kick with that leg. I have not been able to correct for this and when I have tried I end up hurt. So I keep the splay. The left foot is straight, though.

I have had a decade of running behind me. I intend to run until two weeks after the day I die. I want to try barefoot out of mostly curiosity, but injury prevention sounds very nice too. I want to recapture that feeling I had hiking when I was 18. I wish I could forgo the shoes totally, but the winters here are too severe to run around in thin shoes. I have a long and exciting summer ahead of me!

Week Three: Strides

Total weekly miles: 26 miles.

Total BF miles: 7 miles

Barefoot Sessions: 5.

Terrain: Stayed mostly on trails this week. I did run about 1.5 miles on asphalt in the rain.

My barefoot miles are purely barefoot at this time.

Weather: Cooler week this week, but couple runs were warm. One was in the rain.

Condition of Feet: Feet are experiencing more issues. I have TOFP and sometimes they feel stiff. I have been able to keep the pain under control with limited ibuprofen (never before a run or during) and icing the feet. Will be watching them closely. Soles are fine, sometimes tenderish, but never really what you would call pain.

Comments: No comments, lots of smiles. On one run a man politely waited until I was past him and then eagerly took pictures with his phone. Norwegians are very polite.

Nasty things: I ran through a lot of mud this week as we had a few storms. I still love mud the most, even the sticky deep kind. Feet have been getting dirty all right.

Changes in Running Style: I have been concentrating on my form and this week I began to tune in more closely when BFR. I am finding it more difficult to run in shoes. My BF mileage has also increased to the point (1 to 2 miles a session) that carrying my shoes is getting to be a pain.

Injuries: Some runner’s knee left over from a very hilly route from last week. I think I overpronate in shoes. Cleared up nicely this week though. Will have to keep an eye on it.

Wisdom McNuggets: Something really clicked for me this week. When BF, I was able to find my form quite easily. It is instinctive to find it. I am not staying with my limited times anymore, but have run a couple 20 and 30 minutes BFR. I am listening to the tops of my feet closely and think I will stick around in the 20 to 30 minute range for next week.

Asphalt is still a very skilled surface for me. It doesn’t hurt and is very nice to run on, but I really have to focus on my form to prevent it from beating my feet up. Trails and gravel are easier than running on asphalt. I will continue to rotate some asphalt in and out of my routine. I am fine with slowly getting comfortable on it. I prefer trails anyway.

As I mentioned, I am beginning to dislike running in shoes. They don’t seem to fit right and it is impossible to get the laces on without it being too tight or too loose. I tried a loop this week wherein I was able to secrete my shoes and run it without carrying them. It immediately improved my running and I floated over the gravel with little pain. I was also able to keep my cadence up and unweight my feet better. This next week I am cutting out (maybe) all shoe miles and start BFR on 1 to 3 mile loops in the area. Eventually, I should be able to work back up to my normal 5 miles later this summer. This is a very difficult decision for me, so I may break down and run normal shod miles on BF days off.

I am happy that my soles are seemingly tough enough to take anything on. I am shocked by this and seldom have I been in pain running BF on anything. Well, gravel still takes concentration but I can get through it. Trails on rocks, roots and mud are easy. Asphalt is easy on my soles too, and I will usually aim for any gravel I see. Gravel roads are the worst on my soles, but it really isnt that bad. How common is this? Am I blessed?

Week 2: A little bit of pain

Total weekly miles: 21 miles.

Total BF miles: 3.5

Barefoot Sessions: 4

Terrain: Ran the majority over gravel, but I did run over gravel and trails. Did about a mile on trails.

No minimalist shoes, ran the balance of the route in regular running shoes.

Weather: Was wetter, but did have some sun. Some snow while in Oslo.

Condition of Feet: Some TOFP has been developing this week, almost totally in the right foot. It has been very minor, however. Will have to watch miles closely.

Comments: No comments this week.

Nasty things: Nothing nasty this week.

Wisdom McNuggets: I need to be more patient. This is very difficult for me to do because I am enjoying myself quite a bit. However, the TOFP is showing me I need to stick to the 10 percent rule or risk injury and down time. This week I will add ten percent on last week and stick to it strictly. I hope I can do this.

I have also starting tracking my miles online, BF and regular running. I am going to be able to see any differences in speed. I will keep you all posted.

Week Four: Humility

Total weekly miles: 7 miles.

Total BF miles: 4 miles.

Barefoot Sessions: 2

Terrain: Trails, trails, and more trails.

Still no minimalist shoes being used.

Weather: Warmer and sunnier.

Condition of Feet: TOFP ran out of control.

Comments: No comments, lots of smiles.

Nasty things: I may have stepped in doggy doo, but I am not sure, it was when I was stomping through mud.

Changes in Running Style: No changes this week.

Injuries: The knee still bothered me a little. My feet were not in good shape.

Wisdom McNuggets: TMTS. That’s really it. I pushed through pain I should not have pushed through. I ignore TOFP that I should have been listening to. I paid the price in pain and frustration. I took 4 days off this week to let the feet get caught up. The rest helped and the TOFP is now gone, although there is some stiffness. I am not going to run anymore if there is any pain. I am not going to push it. I have been a fool.

To that end, I am scrapping last week’s plans to ditch the shoes and run only BF. I am not ready for this yet and will only push myself more to get some miles in. Not going to press the issue anymore.

I guess it has not been the best week for me this week, but I am healthy to try to do this right this week.

Another week

Total weekly miles: 25 miles.

Total BF miles: 6 miles.

Barefoot Sessions: 4

Terrain: Ran a wide range of terraine this week. I hit trails, gravel, and asphalt. (More on that below)

My barefoot miles are purely barefoot at this time.

Weather: Warm week with one day of rain.

Condition of Feet: TOFP is gone, finito. The four days rest took care of it all and my feet are very stronge now. However the tendonitis-shin splint injury in the left leg is beginning to cause problems. It is forcing my left foot to lag somewhat and causes a knot in the foot that is not going away. Not TOFP really, but needs to be taken care of.

Comments: Smiles and polite interest. On a trail run a woman asked me if it hurt.

Nasty things: Ran in the rain and so almost stepped on lots of snails, slugs, and worms.

Changes in Running Style: My barefoot form has come along very well this last week. I am listening closely for foot slaps on asphalt, and picking those tootsies up. I think this has contributed to being free from TOFP.

Injuries: Pain left part of foot and shin splint-tondonitis acting up. I think I have figured out why. I was running in some sandals yesterday, not working out, just grabbing something from the car and I noticed my weak left leg will allow me to heel strike if the heel is covered. I never noticed this before and believe I am doing this in my shod miles, maybe affecting the condition.

Wisdom McNuggets: I incorporated as many differing surfaces into my BFR this week. If I felt my form was inefficient, I stayed on asphalt. If I felt my soles were softening and getting a little too comfortable on the asphalt, I hit the gravel roads. If I noticed my concentration was off or just wanted more fun, I hit the trails. Three different skills for BFR that can only be developed by different surfaces. I urge all BFR transitioners to do this.

I still do not care for gravel, but I can do it.

I am going to try to BFR full time again. I am pretty sure the shod miles are interfering a little, but really I need to cut back on miles to allow my splint-tendonitis to heal. I figure this is a good excuse to make the switch. This will be hard for me as this week I finally nailed the whole center of gravity thing and improved my speedwork from 10:03 to 8:39. That is a once in a lifetime improvement. I will get there again I am sure with BFR, but not this year. I will probably slip the shoes back on at least once more to run the whole island from top to bottom once this season.

Injury prevention and patience. I know, we all learn this lesson. 1. Rest if it hurts 2. Stay focused 3. Rest if it hurts and finally 4. Running is a lot funner if it does not hurt.

I will rest if it hurts now.

Week 7

Total weekly miles: 5.5

Total BF miles: 5.5

Barefoot Sessions: 3

Terrain: Mostly asphalt, but got some trails and gravel in.

Gave my shoes to a friend for safe keeping. I am not using shoes anymore.

Weather: Very warm week.

Condition of Feet: The left foot is slowly getting stronger. I notice I am limping less, but I will watch it closely. The story this week is about the soles. Sore and tender because of the asphalt.

Comments: More smiles and polite interest.

Nasty things: No nastiness.

Changes in Running Style: The form has been coming along very well. This week I have noticed a dramatic improvement in the way I run. I posted record times on trails and record distances on asphalt this week. I have discovered how to float or sproing or whatever the correct terms would be.

Injuries: Pain is gone in the left foot. Splint still flaring up from time to time if I am not careful with form. It is a good reminder I am doing something wrong. Plantar pads are bruised this week in the right foot. No blisters, but finding hot spots. Need to watch pushing off and up the tempo on asphalt.

Wisdom McNuggets: Gave the shoes to a friend so I am not tempted to use them. I was sorely tempted earlier this week. I am hitting 2 miles at a time and feel like I am making good progress. I am happy. This week’s lesson? Asphalt is tricky. Not only do you need to get your form near perfect on this hard stuff, it can also be brutal to the soles, even without rocks. I did a long asphalt route that ended on gravel. The first part made my feet so tender that by the second part, the gravel kicked my butt. The soles were almost raw, but after some rest have healed and are tougher than ever. Lesson: run on different surfaces. Respect asphalt.

Week Seven…..

Has it been only seven weeks? Feels like I was born with barefeet.

Total weekly miles: 10 miles

Total BF miles: 10 miles

Barefoot Sessions: 5

Terrain: Mostly asphalt, but also trails.

My barefoot miles are purely barefoot at this time.

Weather: Warm.

Condition of Feet: Left foot has made up some serious ground. I don’t limp anymore. Feet were good, but am experiencing capsulitis, which I at first mistook for blisters.

Comments: Smiles and polite interest.

Nasty things: Nothing gross while running, but I mowed the lawn BF and stepped on about four large slugs. The grass turned my feet green and they wouldn’t come clean!

Changes in Running Style: The form has been nothing but smooth this week, but I am finding it difficult preventing sore plantars.

Injuries: Capsulitis on the second metatarsal.

Wisdom McNuggets: This week I learned 1. a high cadence can eliminate many problems. 2. pavement can be fun as well as challenging.

Week….um..8 or 9 or something.

Total weekly miles: 14 miles

Total BF miles: 12 miles

Barefoot Sessions: 5

Terrain: Asphalt for form. Trails for fun.

Wore aqua shoes for two miles of this week’s totals.

Weather: Warm week. Not hot.

Condition of Feet: After a long run on Monday, I had one day of TOFP. Not really noticeable, but I took a day off to be sure. New problem this week: Morton’s Toe. Basically, my shortened first metatarsal is causing an unsual load to be placed at the head of the second metatarsal. This results in high pain and tenderness developing on the site. Callouses form and I feel as though I am walking on gravel. It is very unpleasant.

Comments: Smiles and polite interest. Someone hollered something I didn’t catch as I had headphones on.

Nasty things: No nastiness, but I saw my first beer bottle smashed in my path.

Changes in Running Style: I have been working hard on cadence this week.

Injuries: No injuries. The splint problem is almost gone. Left foot is nearly as strong as my right one. Woohoo on that.

Wisdom McNuggets: I reached a milestone this week. I have reached the halfway point in my transition mileage. I am aiming to get back up to my 20 to 25 mile weeks in 5 mile sessions. I can now run 2.5 miles BF. I have also been very frustrated this week with my Morton’s Toe problem. I have been playing with the form and may have found some working solutions, but it has been hard. I even considered putting the shoes back on just to get some miles in. However, some things are looking promising as solutions. The pain can be great and the discomfort can be immense. If I cannot solve this issue, I will be forced to ditch BFR. I suspect, however, that I am just on a low swing. I did manage to run yesterday without any problems by altering my form and ramping the hell out of the cadence.

What will this week bring?
