After a long lay off due to stubborn Achilles tendon problem, I tentatively resumed barefoot running this week.
On Monday, after a superset track session I ran my mile cool down on a very wet, all-weather track. It felt great, and surprisingly, there was no soreness on my feet (I think a dry track might have produced different results though). So, it was good to learn that the feet have retained a little resistance to blistering. The Achilles is still a little sore with a slight bump still present — I’ll keep a close eye on it and back off if it worsens again.
Today, out for an easy 7 mile jog on the road, I ran the last mile barefoot. The road was mostly quite smooth with some coarse aggregate in places. The feet faired well with slight soreness and no blistering or hot spots.
The winter in the UK has been the harshest for many years and the roads are generally in terrible condition with pot-holes and breaking surfaces aplenty, so even without my Achilles problem it would have been hard for this barefoot runner to keep things going over the last few weeks. It was a real pleasure to once again feel the cool road and — in places — water on my feet.
