Just over 3 months into my barefoot running experiment, and I am wondering about my experience so far.
After 29 barefoot runs there is no doubt in my mind that some of my ‘usual’ injuries: runner’s knee and plantar fasciitis, have been lessened.
After my layoff in June, I built my mileage back up quite quickly, and would normally have been at risk from knee problems. I believe that even running just 10% mileage barefoot encourages a more leg friendly running action. The plantar fasciitis has steadily improved although not as much as it did in the early stages of barefoot running.
Of course, my Achilles tendon issue has been a limiting factor recently and with the marathon in Florence looming, I have chosen to reduce the barefoot running a little.
After a half marathon yesterday in atrocious conditions I ran a mile and a half barefoot on reasonably smooth road. Feet were quite sore afterwards, indicating that they have softened slightly from lack of exposure to the road recently.
