Today was very grey, the weather was distinctly colder, and people were wrapping up – so I felt even more out of place in my lycra shorts and barefoot.
As I turned one corner up onto a bridge a man I was running towards said “Mate, where’s your shoes?”, but in quite an aggressive way, as if I had offended him.
” Don’t need any”, I replied. “That’s right”, he shouted back as I carried on running, “‘cos cuckoo people don’t need shoes…”, I didn’t hear the rest.
He was really frowning and clearly wanted to make a point. It was as if I was walking around naked and I had violated public decency.
To him, I clearly had.
