I’ve gone from Feast to Famine in the matter of 48 hours. After my breakthrough last week, I feel that my concentration has really fallen off. This Monday, I went out for a 1.25 mile run and right around the 1 mile mark I began to feel my old antagonist ITBS creeping back into my left knee area.
Now don’t take me for an idiot. I knew when switching last month to Barefoot running that my injuries wouldn’t go away like magic, but until this point I haven’t felt a twinge of real pain. What I believe to be the problem is that even though I am running with a better midfoot strike, I am still over striding and that might be the issue with my ITBS.
My 1.25 mile run on Monday was followed by 5 hours of internet research on how to get rid of this ITBS forever. Here is what I am now attempting. Hip stretches, Glute stretches, Glute strengthening, icing, foam and tennis ball rolling. I’ve bought the book Chi Running and will be reading it throughout this dooms day snow storm we are having here in DC.
I attempted a second run on Wednesday using the knowledge I gained from my research and I was able to make it a mile without any real pain, but I could still feel a trace of ITBS. Since the snow has kept me inside, I am keeping with my stretches and exercises every day until we thaw out and I can test my form again.
THIS SUCKS!!! 2.25 miles all Barefoot, all unsuccessful
Cheers, Bruno
