In December I was hospitalized briefly because of a kidney stone. An Xray taken at that time incidentally showed “degenerative changes in the spine, especially L4-5.” I’ve always been aware of the impact of running with heels landing first and always surmised that that impact can’t be easy on the spinal column. Logically, then, if I wasn’t landing heels first when running,
After a break from last long run, I’m back week 11
and hoping to get in some more miles this week. My weeks have just been insanely busy and getting my runs in has been a challenge. I managed 2 miles on the treadmill yesterday along with 2hrs of barefoot belly dance. The 2mi felt effortless, great run!
Week 1: A Whopping 1/2 Mile
Went out Sunday for a 1/2 mile run. Overall it felt fantastic. To be clear: My goal is not to run barefoot 100% of the time. I’m highly focused on learning the Pose Method of running – and I see barefooting as a way to build my foot strength as well as give me feedback on my form.
There were two significant improvements in this run compared to previous ones. First, the hot spots
Introduction
Well, I almost feel like an imposter here, as I do most of my running on a treadmill and only run a modest number of miles – 22 weekly – and am just starting to run one mile daily barefoot. I do understand that running barefoot on a treadmill can’t compare to running barefoot outside, but it’s a very different experience nonetheless and I’m looking forward to reaping
Back into the barefoot routine
This 2 weeks has seen 2 barefoot runs, both as part of longer runs in shoes, and also a reasonable amount of barefoot ‘training’.
The first run was pushing the distance a bit for me at the moment; a total of 2.2 miles on some quite prickly roads. Two sections were run barefoot: 1.7m shortly after starting then again half a mile to finish my 7 mile run.

Week 13: Settling In
This week was all about merging my mental ability to adjust my form, cue my body to relax, and my physical ability to run longer distances. This week I finished a 7-mile run, my longest distance since my marathon last year in October. Since the marathon, being injured, and starting this BF thing, I had only done a 10k (6.2 miles) on Thanksgiving and that was a major ITB disaster in itself.
