What is your excuse?

I pulled a t-shirt out of the drawer today. On the back are the words ‘What’s Your Excuse?  I got the t-shirt after running a 10 mile race a while back.  I don’t wear it much because it’s the only race I ever won.

We all know that exercise is good for us on so many different levels, yet we often make the most ridiculous excuses for not exercising. On his blog, the great coach Jeff Galloway, talks about being too busy to exercise. How daft is that? If you are too busy to exercise then, frankly, you don’t really want to exercise. Jeff mentions how most recent US Presidents and Vice Presidents exercise. Here in the UK, our Prime Ministers are often photographed out running, so too are other leading politicians and high ranking businessmen and women. Are these people too busy to exercise? Of course they are not, they might be extremely busy people, but they probably schedule their time a little better than most of us (and they know how to work the media, but that’s another story). They also understand that a fit body makes for a fit mind and that 30 minutes spent exercising probably makes them at least 30 minutes more productive during the rest of the day.

But the point is that if your excuse is being too busy then you should be asking yourself again: what really is my excuse? Answer that honestly and you might get a better understanding of why you are not exercising.

And, what’s my excuse? I’m off to look at that t-shirt again.
